Cleaning a tote bag made of mixed materials requires a targeted approach-you cannot submerge the bag in water or wash it in a machine, as moisture will damage the leather and ruin the shape of the cork.
Treat each material separately with spot-cleaning techniques:Caution
1.Spot-clean the premium cotton
- Solution: Mix a few drops of mild liquid detergent or wool wash in a bowl of lukewarm water.
- Method: dip a clean white microfiber cloth into the solution, wring it out until it is barely damp and gently dab stained areas of the cotton.
- Rinse: wipe away soap residue using a second cloth dampened only with plain cold water. Avoid dragging water onto adjacent leather or cork sections.
2. Condition and clean the leather
- Method: Wipe off surface dust with a dry cloth. Apply a dime-sized amount of specialized leather cleaner or leather conditioner to a soft cloth (never directly onto the leather} and work it in gentle circular motions.
- Caution: keep oil-based leather conditioners away from the raw edge of the cork and uncoated cotton, as oil will stain both.
3. Wipe down the natural cork
- Solution: Cork is naturally water-resistant and anti-microbial, so it requires minimal moisture . Mix mild soap with water
- Method: Gently wipe the cork surface using a soft sponge or cloth wrung out until damp. Use light, liner strokes following the grain of the cork.
- Avoid: Do not scrub with acrasive pads, stiff brushes, or harsh chemical cleaners {like bleach or alcohol}, which can cause the natural cork veneer yo crack or peel away from its fabric baking.
4. Drying & Final Care
- Stufff the tote bag with clean, white tissue paper or dry cotton towels to help it maintain its structure.
- Allow the bag to air-dry naturally in a cool, well-ventilated room away from direct heat, radiators, or direct sunlight.
